Wisdome Stockholm, Sweden

A Triumph of Timber Engineering and Sustainable Architecture.

At Wisdome Stockholm, challenging designs and complex construction projects are transformed into awe-inspiring experiences. The new extension of the National Swedish Museum of Technology showcases world-class architecture and innovative design. It pushes the boundaries of what is possible in modern timber engineering.

Glassense produced double glazed glass units for this project. Using 10mm tempered SKN183 on LowIron and laminated 8mm LowIron glass. The combination of these glasses provides a sun protection glass with the best light transmission and lowest reflection possible. The largest IGU length is up to six meters.

Revolutionary Architecture by Elding Oscarson

Elding Oscarson, an innovative architectural firm, has completely transformed the possibilities of building with wood through their groundbreaking Wisdome structure. To start, the design highlights a stunning roof that features a billowing checked pattern, immediately capturing attention. This intricate pattern consists of five layers of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams, which work together to create a visually striking and structurally efficient design.

Furthermore, these beams achieve an impressive 48-meter span, eliminating the need for any supporting columns and emphasizing the ingenuity of the design. To bring this vision to life, the team used approximately 20 kilometers of LVL wood. The Wisdome structure showcases how innovative thinking and expert craftsmanship can redefine the potential of wooden architecture.

Most importantly, this approach stands out as a climate-smart choice, making a meaningful contribution to sustainable construction practices. As a result, Wisdome Stockholm will serve as a critical reference point, demonstrating the potential of timber in modern architecture. Ultimately, it pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved with wood, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious design.

The roof’s dramatic curvature rises from the ground to a height of over 12 meters at its peak, creating a striking visual effect. It flows gracefully around a hemispherical dome, which forms the heart of the Wisdome structure.
